1948 Martin D-18
On consignment, C.F Martin 1948 D-18 SN 108077:
This guitar is in stellar playing condition, featuring a fresh neck reset, a couple of professionally repaired top cracks, and a setup by renowned luthier Greg Maxwell in Ohio, who specializes in vintage Martin and Gibson repairs. It appears to retain its original finish with beautiful patina and checking, with us finding no evidence of overspray, Brazilian rosewood bridge and fingerboard, and lightly worn original frets, indicating careful and minimal use over the years. Upgrades include a new bone nut and long saddle, Waverly tuners (original Klusons included in the case), a strap button is installed in the heel, solid ebony bridgepins, (all work done by Maxwell). The guitar plays and sounds wonderful, with great intonation, and is ready for many years of use with no immediate work needed.
The original 1948 Harptone case is in excellent condition, with a purple plush interior, double diamond symbol, round lock, and minor exterior wear. It includes the original worn handle (cracked leather, tarnished metal) for authenticity, alongside a newer replacement handle for functionality.
This instrument is an excellent condition for its age, and while not perfect cosmetically, it is rare to find a 77 year-old instrument this clean. The cracks exhibited here are common nature, and our well repaired. There are many small bumps, scrapes, scratches, all that you should expect on an instrument this age, with the most disturbing being what looks like two small cigarette burns on the back. overall, this guitar has survived an amazing condition, and it is very rare to see a period correct case that even comes close to this level of cleanliness.
It maintains a very open and clean sound, with an unexpected amount of sustain for a mahogany guitar. The bass E has a great level of depth, which isn’t often found on Tapered braced mahogany Martins. The Guitar has strong bell like trebles, and the instrument cuts well. It refuses to top out, But also responds well to individuals with a light touch, due to its age and seasoning. if you have been looking for a very original example with a big open sound, for enjoyment or investment, give this one special consideration; unless you have been living under a rock, you have likely noticed the amazing value increases of vintage Martins.
